Performance & Handling
Making its debut during the 2012 model year, the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic comes in two builds-sedan and four-door hatchback-spanning three different trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. All trims come standard with an ECOTEC 1.8L 4-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing, which offers 138 horsepower and 125 pounds-feet of torque. The Sonic really shines, though, with the LT- and LTZ-available ECOTEC 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing. This turbocharged engine ups available horsepower to 138 and a more-important 148 pound-feet of torque. All trims come standard with a five-speed manual transmission and offer the option of a six-speed automatic transmission, while models outfitted with the turbocharged engine solely offer a six-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy varies: 1.8L engines with automatic transmission offer 25 city / 35 highway MPG, while the turbocharged engine provides an impressive 29 city / 40 highway MPG.
Standard Features & Options
On the exterior, the Sonic offers standard specs including 15" aluminum wheels, body colored accents and black beltline moldings. Looking inside, the spacious-feeling Sonic includes single-zone manual air conditioning, adjustable seats with rear bench 60/40 split for added storage space, sport cloth seat trim, tilt and telescopic steering column with sport steering wheel, manual windows, AM/FM stereo with equalizer, an auxiliary audio input jack, and a Driver Information Center. The LT upgrades to heated side mirrors, chrome beltline moldings, deluxe cloth seat trim, power windows, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with three-month trial, and an AM/FM stereo with CD player (optional on the LS and includes MP3 playback, seek-and-scan, digital clock, auto-tone control, Radio Data System (RDS), equalizer, and auxiliary audio input jack). |

The LT also features two separate upgrade packages that, if selected, put it on par with the LTZ trim. The Wheels and Foglamp Package offers 16" aluminum wheels and foglamps. The Connectivity Plus Cruise Package equips the LT with cruise control, Bluetooth wireless technology, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and an upgraded AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player, USB port and Bluetooth audio streaming. The LTZ comes standard with said packages, as well as trim-exclusive 17" aluminum wheels, chrome door handles and body strip, heated front seats trimmed with perforated leatherette, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the option for a power sunroof.
Safety Features
Named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Sonic doesn't let its subcompact status make it a pushover.
